Is it really almost May?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The Sports Calendar says it’s nearly May-NBA Playoffs, NHL Playoffs, MLB, Kentucky Derby this weekend-sadly Mother Nature seems to think it’s still March here in Salt Lake City. Seriously…Come on now MN, let’s have a little Spring time before the heat hits in June.

Speaking of “heat”…It’s now on the Utah Jazz. I know they still lead the series (3-2) but they must now close things out on Friday night, because going back to Denver for a Game 7 might be too much to hope for. The good news for Utah is that they competed well last night against a team playing for their post season lives. The bad news is that they turned the ball over too much (15 times) and didn’t get enough from the “Others” (Miles 9, Fez 3, Korver 0). I expect that the series ends tomorrow night when they return to the Energy Solutions Arena, especially with the lack of Nene in the Denver lineup. I think the energy and effort in the building tomorrow night will be too much for the Nuggets, Jazz win and advance. Up next??? My guess LA, but only after that series goes 7 games. I think OKC makes it’s last stand in Game 6.

Tonight’s Games…

1. Dallas at San Antonio-The team that made one of the biggest trades this season will be eliminated tonight by their in-state arch nemisis. The Spurs control tempo and are playing at a higher level right now. Where is Jason Kidd? Another crushing playoff defeat for Mark Cuban. You know this makes Popovich smile…

2. Phoenix at Portland-I think this series ends tonight too. The Blazers have been a great story this season playing without some of their best players most of the year. But in the long run it’s probably best they end it tonight (so not to further damage the knee of Brandon Roy) and look towards next season. Plus with the Suns advancing it means more opportunity to see the creative workings of Steve Nash’s mind

Strike Another Blow to the Jazz Playoff Hopes

Friday, April 16th, 2010

As we discussed on the air yesterday afternoon, the Utah Jazz have a real uphill battle on their hands to advance past the 1st round of the playoffs against Denver. Well those slim chances may just have become NONE, with today’s news. Our Jazz Insider/SL Trib Jazz Beat Writer, Ross Siler, broke the news this morning that AK-47 will miss the Denver series and perhaps beyond, if there is a beyond for the Jazz.

It was hard for me to see Utah beating Denver with AK, but without him I will say no CHANCE! I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think I will be….

My Kind of Town

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Just arrived here in Chicago (my favorite American City) and have settled in downtown at the lovely Embassy Suites Lakefront. Here for the RSL vs. Chicago Fire game tomorrow night. Looking forward to some good Chicago Style Pizza and Dogs while I’m here. When you live in a city like Salt Lake City, you sometimes forget and miss the energy and life that you feel when you are in a town like this. I absolutely love it, though the 1 hour and 15 minute ride in from O’Hare isn’t something that I’d want to deal with on a regular basis….

Big match for RSL tomorrow night…I agree with GM Garth Lagerwey’s assesment that they need 7 wins in their last 12 matches to hope to be playoff eligible. Head Coach Jason Kreis disagrees, you can hear his comments from the RSL Coaches Corner last night in the Audio Vault at kall700sports.com.  If RSL is going to win here tomorrow night it’s going to be by winning the match up against the ever so difficult Fire backline that includes two All Stars, Soumare and Conde. The match kicks off at 6:30…

Nothing new today on the Carlos Boozer situation…he’s still technically a member of the Utah Jazz. I listened to an hour’s worth of Chicago Sports Radio this afternoon on my drive to the hotel and no mention of Boozer or the Bulls…

Finally 6 days and counting until Fall College Football Practice begins….Utah reports Wednesday and begins practice on Thursday…You will have daily camp reports right here on my blog and on the air at KALL 700 Sports…

I’m off to get a slice….chicago_skyline2

Monday Monday…Can’t Trust That Day…

mamasandpapaspapasandmamas6sd

Alrighty then….After a long weekend off back to the work day today…Counting down the days until the college football season begins…August 5th here in the state of Utah if you are keeping track…Utah reports on the 5th of August and begins practice on the 6th…Had a good show today with interviews with All Pro Jordan Gross and Utah Offensive Coordinator Dave Schramm.  Both interviews are posted in the audio vault at kall700sports.com. Gross donated $500 K to the Utah football program for scholarships and financial help moving forward. He’s the 3rd Ute to make a sizeable donation in the last couple of years, with both Alex Smith and Steve Smith (no relation) having given big donations too. Next Ute to give, my guess Eric Weddle…

Dave Schramm discussed the Utah QB situation, but without giving much away in the process. He says it’s still a 3 QB race beginning camp and the style of play this season will be determined by who wins the job during camp. My feel is still if Jordan Wynn is close, then the job will be his because I think the Utah Staff likes his upside more than the other 2 QB’s. Stay tuned….

Everyone’s favorite Jazzman/soon to be ex-Jazzman, Carlos Boozer opened his yap again today. This time to WQAM Radio in Miami. If you’d like to hear the interview, go to the audio vault at kall700sports.com. The end of his tenure can’t come soon enough for most Jazz Fans. Has there ever been more of a match made in heaven, than Pat Riley and Carlos Boozer, two guys who cant’ be taken at their word or be trusted.

News today out of the baseball world…The commish Bud Selig is considering Rose for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Here’s a good look inside the story….If this is the case it’s about time! I long defended Rose as worth of Hall of Fame status. I don’t agree with his gambling on baseball, but the Hall of Fame is about what he did on the field as a player. For the Hall not to include the All Time Hits Leader and the man called “Charlie Hustle” does a disservice to the game of Baseball. I hope that Rose gets in to the Hall, but I don’t think he has a place in the game.

Sunday Morning Tidbits

c-bus

Sitting here in Columbus early Sunday morning getting ready to board a flight back to SLC…

Quite disappointed by the effort of RSL last night here at Crew Stadium. Granted that both teams were short handed, but Columbus was missing, arguably, it’s top 5 players last night and still managed to outplay RSL for the final 60 minutes of the match. Just doing the match and the standings, with the matches remaining, it’s becoming more and more difficult for RSL to think playoffs. Just simply getting results/ties on the road isn’t going to be good enough. Kreis’ side is going to have to find a way to win against quality opponents on the road down the stretch. A few bright spots last night for RSL: Javier Morales appears to be rounding back into the form he found at the end of last season. Nat Borchers continues to be solid in the back and the youngster Raphael Cox scored his first goal last night in MLS.  RSL can’t afford not to get 3 pts this Friday against FC Dallas….

I wrote the other day about the surprise start of my guy Tom Watson at the British Open. Well he’s 18 holes away from making history today at Turnberry. I’ve been a Tom Watson fan since I was 7 years old and would love nothing more than to see him win today, but win or lose he’s proven that he’s truly one of the greats in Golf History and just simply reminded a generation of young golf fans that the game did indeed exist prior to a guy named Tiger. Here’s a great read from Mike Lupica in today’s NY Daily News on Watson and his run at the British Open.

Paul Millsap is offically still a Jazzman. Millsap and Kevin O’Connor met with the media yesterday afternoon and everyone was saying the right things. It’s interesting to me that O’Connor still refuses to admit publically that he and the Jazz are in “trade mode” with Carlos Boozer. I understand not divulging any state secrets, but not to admit to the desire to move Boozer seems to me like ignoring the 800 pound gorilla in the corner of the room. I still believe that Boozer will not be in a Jazz uniform when camp begins in mid-September, but with that said the Boozer rumor mill has been silent for the last 3 or 4 days.

Looking forward to Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. I’ll be in Las Vegas for the MWC Football Meetings. Doing the show on Tuesday and Wednesday from the Green Valley Ranch and Resort. I’ll be anxious to see how the pre season poll comes out. I don’t have any doubt that TCU will be #1, I’m just wondering how Utah and BYU fare behind them. My poll to the league went this way: #1 TCU, #2 Utah, #3 BYU and #4 Air Force. My guess is that BYU will end up at #2 in the overall poll. I’ll chat with all the players and coaches from around the league on the show this week and if you miss any of it you can catch those interviews here on the website in the audio vault at kall700sports.com.

Friday Morning Quick Hits on my way out of town

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Packed up and getting ready to head to Columbus this morning for Real Salt Lake and the Crew tomorrow night…

1. Good news for a shorthanded RSL Squad…The League’s reigning MVP (Schelotto) will not play due to a hamstring injury. The Crew will also be without Marshall, Rogers and Ekpo. Nothing is a given in MLS and especially for RSL, but a road win/result is needed tomorrow night. Especially with the Galaxy, who sit ahead of Real, winning on the road impressively last night against NYRB.  RSL has too many teams above them right now not to be picking up points against wounded opponents. 5pm for the only live and in person call of the match this weekend, with Brian Kamler and myself from Crew Stadium.

2. Nothing new to report rumor-wise this morning on the Carlos Boozer situation. As I wrote two days ago, the Miami Heat appear to be the team with the most interest in Boozer right now. They have a pressing need to placate Dwayne Wade so he doesn’t leave town. The reports over the last 36 hours have Boozer and Lamar Odom as targets in South Florida. I don’t think this deal happens in days, but I do believe that it will happen in weeks and I don’t think there is anyway that BMB (Big Mouth Boozer) is in camp with the Jazz in September.

3. The Millsap deal is done and the Jazz are matching. I’d love to be in the room when Millsap’s representation and Kevin O’Connor meet to sign the paperwork. I think that Millsap’s people did him a great dis-service by opening their mouths and bad mouthing the Jazz organization. They are clearly not experienced in the ways of negociating contracts in the NBA and put their client in an ackward spot by calling his employer names. Paul will be fine, as long as he continues to do what he’s done the last couple of seasons, but his uncle/agent needs to learn the ways of “big business” in the Association before his next contract situation.

4. As I write this morning the 2nd round of the British Open is underway at Turnberry. My man, Tom Watson, is still in the hunt at age 59. I grew up in KC and Watson is from KC and continues to live there. In the late 70′s and early 80′s there were two predominant sports figures in the Midwest/KC. #1 George Brett of the KC Royals and #2 Tom Watson, who was the best player in the world for a 5-7 year stretch. In the age before the 24 hour sports/news cycle and way too many choice on TV, Watson was must see everytime he teed it up. His putter abandoned him and his reign as the world’s best did too. He’s been extremely competitive since on both the PGA and the Senior PGA Tour’s. He’s a gentlemen and great competitior. I certainly hope he can at least stay in contention today and tomorrow, I need something to root for over the weekend.

Off to the airport…check back for my travel log and updates….

Yet Another Carlos Boozer Trade Rumor

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

miamibeach

Okay first it was Miami during the season, then it was Detroit just after the season, then last week it was a three team deal with Portland and Chicago, then yesterday it was Boozer going on Chicago radio and saying he was going to recruit D-Wade to Chicago…Well now maybe it’s Dwayne Wade, who is demanding talent around him or else, that will be bring Boozer to South Beach….

carlos-boozer_300_080131

Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojarnarowksi is reporting tonight that the Heat are targeting Carlos Boozer and Lamar Odom in order to placate D-Wade and keep him in South Florida. Outside of a bit of talent in Haslem and some cap relief this isn’t a great deal for the Utah Jazz, but one thing it would do is remove the “cancerous” presence of Boozer in the Jazz Lockerroom and organization. I think that Haslem is a solid player (10pts/8 rebs a game) last season, but will you be able to keep him long term?

Can’t vouch for the validity of this story, but Wojo was on the show the other day and he’s an extremely respected NBA reporter…so stay tuned!!

Sunday Night Quick Hits

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

It’s Sunday night and I’m posting…fill in your joke here…I’m getting ready to watch the season premiere of Entourage…

boozer-millsap1-425

1. Still no movement on the Millsap situation with the Jazz and Blazers. The Jazz have until Friday afternoon to match. If you are confused on the luxury tax situation with the Jazz/Millsap and Boozer here’s a good explanation from a guy that’s been on the show a few time with us, Ken Berger of CBS Sports.com. Give it a read and it will shed some light on why the Jazz will likely match the offer.

2. RSL posted a nice win last night against Club America of Mexico. I hesitate to call it a great win against a SuperClub, because Club America didn’t look good at all. In fact, they looked like a team that just began preseason training, which they did. But when you are RSL, a win is a win. Let’s see what happens when it COUNTS this Saturday against an improving Columbus Crew squad.

3. I will be turning in my MWC Preseason Football ballot tomorrow. No worries, I will make an entire posting MWC ballot related. I know that I’m putting TCU #1 on my ballot, I’m just not sure yet who’s #2 and #3, between Utah and BYU.

Check back tomorrow or Tuesday for a full rundown of my pre season ballots.

Saturday Morning Posting

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

millsap-image

Well it’s Saturday morning and here’s what’s happening right now…

1. The Blazers have made Paul Millsap an offer for his services. It’s reported to be a 4 year and $32 million dollar offer, with a signing bonus in the $6.5 million dollar range. The Jazz now have 7 days to match the offer. Tim Buckley did an excellent job outlining the deal and the ramifications in the D-News today. By the way, Millsap is playing in the Derron Williams Charity golf tourney today.

2. The other thing the is very apparent right now is that the Jazz are doing everything possible to trade Carlos Boozer. I would expect this to happen with in the next two weeks.

At this point I would be shocked if the Jazz DON”T match the Blazers offer despite the fact it could cost them $12 million this season…..Stay tuned!!!
