BYU win vs. Oklahoma

The AP Top 25 Football Poll came out just a little while ago…The BYU Cougars made a significant jump in this week’s poll….

Bronco’s Boys are now officially a Top 10 Team!! BYU moved from #20 to #9 in this week’s poll courtesy of the upset win (14-13) over the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday night. Oklahoma fell ten spots to #13. BYU is now the highest ranked non-BCS team, 3 spots ahead of #12 Boise State. If they run the table they WILL have a chance to play for the National Title, but let’s remember that’s still at big IF…

The Utes are up 2 spots to #17 after their Thursday night win over Utah State. TCU, who didn’t play this weekend, is up one spot to #16.

Here’s a look at the complete poll….

Utah vs. Utah state

Well the opener is in the books and well……Paint me unimpressed in Week 1 with Utah and more than impressed with the efforts of the Aggies…

The Good-

1. The energy and effort of Utah State all night long. It’s very clear that Gary Anderson has changed the culture in Logan. His guys played hard all night long. Effort like that will yield some wins in the WAC this season.

2. The Quarterbacks. Both Terrance Cain and Diondre Borel acquitted themselves well! Cain was excellent in the first half, especially in the short passing game and finding David Reed. Borel, while not always pretty, was effective. He kept plays alive with his head and his legs. He just needs some more game experience.

3. The Running Backs. Matt Asiata and Robert Turbin. Asiata had 38 touches and was an absolute bull last night, though he still lacks that 2nd level/break away burst. The question is can he can that kind of beating every week. Turbin and his 1st half burst was outstanding and gives the Aggies a true backfield weapon for the first time since Emmitt White.

4. Utah Special Teams. Vroman and Sellwood, at least for a night, made folks forget about King Louie. In the return game both Luke Matthews and David Reed were good.

The Bad-

1. Utah’s Defense giving up too many big plays. It may be picking nits, but I thought Utah’s Defense was pretty vanilla most of the night and looked a bit confused in several situations. Give Utah State some credit for that, but still they’ve got to get better moving forward.

2. Utah 2nd Half Offense. Either Utah State made some great adjustments in the locker room at halftime or Utah just went ultra conservative in the second half. It was a first game for Terrance Cain and Offensive Coordinator Dave Schramm, so perhaps we chalk it up to learning curve. All the Utah Players I spokes with after the game pointed to one thing that must get better next week, Finishing Off Drives!!!

Sigh of Relief-

1. Both Coaches have to feel good about no major injuries on either side!

If you want to hear what everyone had to say after the game or the game highlights, go to our audio vault and listen right there….

Have you seen the “Punch” yet? No I’m not talking about Rudy T and Kermit Washington…The one that occurred on the Smurf Turf last night in Boise…Well here’s a link to it if you haven’t seen it…Hell of a shot by LaGarrette Blount right on the chin…Better shot by Boise State, folks they are LEGIT!!! Their defense conjured up images of what they did to Utah 3 years ago at Rice Eccles Stadium. So much for Oregon as a Pac-10 contender, they wouldn’t be the best team in the WAC….

Rice Eccles

Two days until college football starts….Just some random thoughts on the games coming up this week locally and nationally…

1. Who’s going to be closer in their loss this weekend, Utah State or BYU? This is not meant as a slight to either program, I just don’t think that either one will win their openers. Utah State and BYU are both roughly 21 to 21 1/2 underdogs. Utah State travels to Utah and BYU travels to Dallas to play Oklahoma. I know that Utah has the big QB question and that Gary Anderson will have his team up and ready to play, but I just don’t think that the Aggies will have enough to match up with the Utah defense and be able to score much at all. On the other hand, I think the Cougars have enough offense to score points even against the 3rd ranked Sooners. Plus if OU gets up early I’d look for Bob Stoops to play his reserves and give BYU a chance to make the game respectable..What do you think?? Let me know in the comment section…

2. Let’s assume for just a minute that Terrance Cain is the starting QB for Utah on Thursday night (Safety Robert Johnson hinted at it last night on our show). Is this a bad thing for Jordan Wynn? Not at all, he’ll like get his shot at some point this season, plus give him a chance to mature and grow into his body, let’s remember he is still just 18 years old.  Plus Ute fans should remember the way Alex Smith got his shot some 6 years ago…You just never know….The better question is what would this mean for Griff Robles? Is he content being the #3 guy and backing up the true freshman Jordan Wynn? How long will he stay and try to compete for a job he may never win (no pun intended)

3. I’m still continually baffled by the national media’s love affair with this BYU Football team in it’s picks for the conference title and potential BCS Busting selections. I have nothing against Bronco Mendenall, in fact I think the world of him, or his program. I just have a hard time comprehending how the Cougars get selected to be “that team” when they have their most daunting non-conference schedule in years and have to face 4 extremely athletic teams (Oklahoma, Florida State, TCU and Utah) this season. The same type teams that have given them all kinds of trouble in recent years. The most troubling thing to me and the biggest question is the defense. Is it good enough??? How much has it improved? Once this question is answered I will have a better handle on just how good this team can or will be….Again feel free to share your thoughts….

4. Here are the Top 3 games I want to see this weekend outside the locals…

Oregon at Boise State–Sadly this one is being played on the same night as Utah/Utah State. If Boise is going to be a BCS player this season, then this is the game!! Just how good is Oregon? I guess we’ll find out Thursday.

Georgia at Oklahoma State–Saturday in Stillwater. There’s been talk that OSU is this year’s Texas Tech and a BCS darkhorse. They will be tested against a talented Georgia defense, but may be lacking offensively without Stafford and Moreno.

Alabama vs. Virginia Tech–The biggest match up from a rankings standpoint this weekend, #5 vs. #7. Both teams have been hyped as national title contenders, not sure I believe it, but I guess we’ll see…
